The paediatric pads instruct the defibrillator to reduce energy of its shock from 150 to 50 joules and are only to be used on patients under the age of 8, or weighing less than 25kg. The pads are also marked with a teddy bear icon for easy identification.

With an energy output of 150 joules, the HeartStart HS1 adult SMART pads cartridge is designed for use in conjunction with the Philips HeartStart HS1 defibrillator, the SMART pads cartridge recognises when the pads have been removed, allowing the defibrillator to start monitoring the patient when applied to the chest.
